Introduction

Teacher (B.Ed/M.Ed)  literally means who teaches is always been a respected figure in our Life. After Parents, Teacher is considered as the most important figure who holds his/her student  hand and showered knowledge so that the student can take decision.

The teacher nurtures their pupil mind so that he can understand between wrong or right. He teaches you to qualify for upcoming challenges in life.

In India, Teaching is not only a profession but a path to enlighten society and thus country. This is the reason, we celebrate Teacher’s day.

Every year on Sept 5 is celebrated as a Teacher’s day to give respect to the teachers for their job in spreading education to the students , to the society and upliftment of the country.

In Modern India, Teacher day is celebrated on the Birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was a former president, scholar, philosopher and Bharat Ratna Awardee.

 

History

There are great guru or Teacher in Ancient India who not only educate their student but took active part in changing the socio, economic, political scenario of that stages.

They were great writers, inventors, strategist, poet etc. Some of the great gurus in Bharat were Ved Vyas, Valmiki, Guru Dronacharya, Chanakya, Aryabhatta, etc.

  • Ved Vyas:-He is regarded as the Guru of Gurus and the festival of “Guru Purnima” is dedicated to him. He is an Author of “Mahabharata” and was a living character at that time.
  • Valmiki:-He is also called the ”Adi Kavi”. He is an Author of “Ramayana” and was a living character at that time.
  • Guru Dronacharya:-He was the Teacher of Kaurava and Pandavas of Mahabharata Ages.He was the Master of Advanced Military and Weapons at their Eras.
  • Chanakya:-He  was also called Kautilya or Vishnu Gupta. He was a Teacher of Political Science in Takshila University . He wrote books like Arthashastra and Niti Shastra (also called Chanakya Niti). He assisted in establishing the Mauryan Empire by Overthrowing Nanda Dynasty.
  • Aryabhata:-Aryabhata was a great mathematician and Astrologers of all time. He is an Author of Aryabhatiya and Arya-Siddhanta.

Eligibility Criteria for  becoming Teacher in India

A candidate must have a minimum of B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree to become a Teacher .

To appear in B.Ed exam, candidate must have passed out Bachelor degree in any stream like Science, Commerce or Arts with minimum 50% marks from a recognized university).

A candidate must have minimum 55% marks in their B.Ed course to pursue as a Teacher.

However, the percentage marks varies from School to School. The candidate can also pursue M.Ed (Master of Education) to add to their Qualification.

In order to become a Government Teacher, the candidate must have to pass the minimum education qualification required for the level the candidate intended to teach [PRT, TGT, PGT Pre-Primary Teacher] and must qualify the Central Teaching Eligibility Test (CTET) or State Teaching Eligibility Test(TET).

Note:

  • PRT:-It means Primary Teacher. A candidate has to pass BTC/NTT/B.EI.Ed.  exam for PRT. He is eligible for Teaching students of Class 1 to 5.
  • TGT:-Short form of Trained Graduate Teacher. A candidate has to pass Bachelor of Education (B.Ed)/ M.Ed  exam for TGT. He is eligible for teaching students of class 6 to 10.
  • PGT:-Short form of Post Graduate Teacher. A candidate has to pass M.P.Ed exam for PGT. He is eligible for Teaching Students of Class 11 & 12.
  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) (Open and Distance Learning):Candidate can also pursue Bachelor of Education through Open and Distance Learning, through IGNOU. The required qualification to Bachelor of Education(B.Ed) through Open and Distance Learning is Graduation with minimum 50 % or Master’s in Science/Social Science/Commerce/Humanities or Bachelors of Engineering/Technology with 55%

  • Pre-School Teacher Education Program-(Eligibility – candidate to pass 10th or equivalent)
  • Nursery Teacher Education Program—(Eligibility—candidate to pass 12th or equivalent with 45%marks)
  • Elementary Teacher Education Program-—(Eligibility—candidate to pass 12th or equivalent with 45%marks)
  • Diploma in Education (D.Ed.)—(Eligibility:-  candidate to  pass 12th or equivalent with minimum 50%.)
  • Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.EI.Ed.)-(Eligibility:- candidate to pass Graduation in any stream with minimum 50%)
  • Physical Education Program (C.P.Ed.)(Eligibility:–candidate to pass 12 or equivalent with minimum 45% or 12 or equivalent with minimum 40% and should have participated in State or National Games.)
  • Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) Program—(Eligibility:-Candidate has a Bachelor of Physical Education (Three year old)  ORGraduate candidates should have represented the state / university in sports / athletics OR In the graduate and inter-collegiate sports / games tournaments, have secured first, second or third positions / passed the course in NCC certificate or adventure games OR Graduate with one year training in sports science, sports management, sports coaching, yoga, Olympic education, sports journalism etc.)
  • Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) (Open and Distance Learning System)
  • Master of Education Program (M.Ed.)—(Eligibility:-Candidate must have Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) with minimum 55%.)
  • Master of Education Program (M.Ed.) (Part Time)—(Eligibility:– Candidate must be Graduate with minimum 2 years of experience in  Education/Administrative field and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) with minimum 55%.)
  • Master of Education Program (M.Ed.) (Open and Distance Education Learning System)

However, to Qualify for Government Teacher, a candidate must also have to pass CTET or TET exam. Selection process also require written examinations & personality assessment
